Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil after São Paulo. It is famous for beautiful beaches, partying, and dancing. The Brazilian government built the city as a tourist town. Here are some popular places to visit while on vacation in Rio de Janeiro:
Sugarloaf is a peak that stands 395 meters tall. The stone was discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1502. The name comes from the conical molds that held sugar for transportation. To reach the top, you can ride in a cable car. This allows you to see the beautiful view of Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara Bay, Copacabana and other beaches.
- Corcovado Mountain
At the top of Corcovado is the symbol of Rio, Christ the Redeemer. You can see the entire city from the top of the mountain. To get to the top of Corcovado and see the statue, use the Corcovado Rack Railway. It is the only transportation to the top, but if you have more time and enjoy climbing, you can take one of the 50 routes to the top. According to the official Brazil site, though, these routes should only be used by avid climbers, and do not substitute as hiking trails.
- Nacional Tijuca / Tijuca Forest
Nacional Tijuca is also known as the Urban Forest, because it only has an area of 32 km2 and is located in the center of Rio de Janeiro. The forest has various kinds of tropical plants, rare animals and some other natural ecosystems protected by the Brazilian government. This forest is suitable for hiking or nature lovers. You can walk through the tropical forest in 1.5 hours and enjoy its beauty.
- Ipanema and Copacabana Beach
Ipanema and Copacabana Beach are the main tourist attraction in Rio de Janeiro. Both of these beaches have world-class facilities. Because they’re so popular, these beaches have no “off season.” As well as swimming and sunbathing, people bike, skate board, roller skate and surf there. Ipanema and Copacabana Beach are famous for their white sand and blue water.
- Angra dos Reis
Angra dos Reis means “Island of the Kings” is a group of 365 islands about 150 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. This area is a major tourist destination for swimming and diving. Once you get there, you can rent boats to get between the different islands.
