The Blasket Islands are a group of islands off the Dingle Peninsula on the western coast of Ireland. In the past, the island had about 150-200 residents, but in the 20th century the population declined through emigration and through forceful evacuation. Now, the island is protected by the Irish government, to keep the island from going into disrepair. There are many things to see and do on the islands. To get to the islands, you will need to take a boat, and you might see Bottlenose Dolphin, Common Dolphin, Orca, Humpback Whale, and Harbour Porpoise on your way there. The most famous sea creature around the islands is the basking shark, which is not dangerous, because it eats plankton. These sharks can grow up to 35 feet. There are also boat tours around the islands, giving you more opportunities to see these beautiful animals.
Sue Redican, known as the “Blasket Island Weaver” is one of the few people who lives on Great Blasket Island. She makes valuable hand-woven fabric, with the best materials found on the island. She has a workshop on the island that is an essential stop. Some of her crafts are also available for sale at “an Gailri Beag” workshop in Dingle Town.
For you who enjoy hiking and walking, there are some great trails to enjoy the beauty of Great Blasket Island. One trail goes from the north part of the island to the south, passing through green pastures. There is also a beautiful view from the top of hill. This trail takes approximately one and a half hours. If you enjoy climbing, there is also a hill to climb, which takes time roughly 2 hours. The trail goes through swamps, green pastures, and other beautiful scenery along the way. Hiking is really the best way to see this island.
Vacationers who want a relaxing time with family or friends should head to the beach. It has a warm and relaxing atmosphere with white sand and beautiful blue water. There are hotels and restaurants on the islands, so you can take a few days there, or you can make a day trip from the peninsula.
