This game comes from the Tamil Nadu region and in English means, “goats and tigers.” It is a two-player board game. One player controls three tigers and the other player controls up to 15 goats. The point of the game is for the tigers to hunt the goats, while the goat is trying to block the tiger’s moves.
This is an ancient bull-taming sport played in the Tamil Nadu region, and is usually performed at the Pongal Festival. It’s also called Manju Virattu, which means pursuing a bull. The sport is now banned because of its cruelty to animals. There are three different versions of this game: Vadi Manju Virattu, Vaeli Virattu, and Vadam Manjuvirattu.
This game requires seeds, pebbles, or shells, and Pallanguzhi board and is usually played by women in South India and Sri Lanka. A Pallanguzhi board looks like mancala, and has similar rules. Each hole has 6 seeds in it. The first player takes the seeds from one hole and drops them one by one in each hole, going counter-clockwise in the opposite direction. The player continues until the last seed is dropped in an empty hole. Then the second player may continue the game the same way. The winner is the player who has the highest number of seeds.
