Korea has many tourist destinations, including Nami Island. Nami Island is a small island of only 430,000 square meters, situated in the middle of the Han River in Chuncheon, South Korea. The island was originally part of the mainland, but due to the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam in 1944 it became an island. To reach Nami Island, you must go to Nami Wharf first. Once at Nami Wharf, you must buy a ticket that the people of Nami call a “visa” because Naminara (the island) is actually a micro nation, although it’s imaginary. It is slightly cheaper to visit at night, but if you do, don’t forget to bring a flashlight, because the island is not lit well. Once you get your visa, you can take a ferry to get to the island. For those of you who are more adventurous, you can take the Zip-wire across to the island.
Arriving at Nami Island, you will be greeted by a row of tall trees. There are several different types of tours to see the island, including a train, golf cart, and a “sky bike”, which looks kind of like a roller coaster, but goes slow.
For you fans of Korean dramas, you are certainly familiar “Winter Sonata.” This drama is filmed on Nami Island. The area where the drama is filmed is called Winter Sonata Lane, but its real name is Metasequoia Lane, which is a collection of trees planted by a group Seoul National University in 1977.
There are other tourist attractions to enjoy on this island as well, including a zoo, botanical gardens, and boat tours. The Song Museum is a collection of Korean pop songs and other Koren music collections. There are several art galleries on the island as well. Every year, the island holds the Nami Island Children’s Book Festival, and is the main sponsor of the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
There are many facilities on the island, so you can stay multiple days and enjoy all of the activities there! The recommended time to visit Nami Island is in May, July-August, and October.
