Have you ever heard of Flamenco? Flamenco is a form of Spanish folk dance and music. Spain is the fifth largest country in Europe. Spanish culture is a mixture of cultures from several different countries, making Spain unique.
Flamenco comes from the Arabs and the Romani. It started as an Arabic dance in Moorish palaces during the 14th century. Then flamenco was developed by the Romani tribe who lived in Andalucía. The Romani are often called the ’fathers’ of flamenco. The point of flamenco is Cante (song style), Toque (guitar playing), Baile (dance) and Palmas (handclaps). There are 3 kinds of Cante:
- Cante Jondo (Deep song): sadness with themes of death, sorrow and grief or religious doubt.
- Cante Intermedio (Intermediate song): the combined elements of Spanish music styles
- Cante Chico (Light song): happiness with themes of love, humor and rural life
Flamenco is performed on a stage accompanied by an acoustic guitar and hand claps. Sometimes it is also accompanied with castanets (musical instrument made from a pair of hard wood or ivory), but some people think castanets reduces the beauty of the flamenco dance.
Flamenco can be done solo, in pairs or in groups. In this dance, women traditionally wear a red dress with a wide bottom, tufted to show the elegant side of a woman. Women have to dance with poise, controlling pride and sensuality. Men wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, which can be black or white. To do the steps in flamenco, you need to draw your foot straight back making a right ankle with your knee and stomp your foot. There are three basic foot steps to do flamenco:
- Planta (ball) – arch the foot
- Tacon (heel) – drop your heel with a sharp crack
- Golpe (stomp) – let your foot fall into the floor, making accents that sound like a hammer
