After living in Indonesia for two years, I always look forward to returning to visit people, eat great food, and see fun sights (We love to have our Good Neighbor Insurance team members share about their travels. Here is one of our associates sharing her thoughts about traveling to Indonesia).
Bandung is definitely my favorite city in Indonesia, and one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the people, the culture, and the food there. Bandung is in a valley, with amazing views from the mountains around it. One of my favorite places Dago Atas. Dago is a well-known street in Bandung, and “atas” means “top.” So Dago Atas is the top part of the street, which goes up one of the mountains on the edge of the city. On Dago Atas are lots of great restaurants with amazing views of the city. If you happen to be in Bandung on New Year’s Eve, head up there and watch the fireworks go off throughout the city. It’s amazing! One favorite of mine is The Stone Café. The food is great, with lots of western and Indonesian options. The ambiance is also really great. Like many Indonesian restaurants, there are little shelters with low tables. You are protected from the rain, but can enjoy the great weather and views.
Another favorite restaurant is Ngopi Doeloe. It is a house turned into a restaurant, which is actually pretty common in Bandung. In fact, a friend of mine lived there as a boy! Because of this, the restaurant has a cool vibe. It’s more of a coffee house, but also has food. Both the food and drinks are pretty good.
If you want to have a true Indonesian experience, go to Sapu Lidi Sawah. It is a Sundanese restaurant in the middle of a rice field! There are individual shelters with tables, as well as a big area with a bunch of tables. In addition to the rice fields is a river with fish and Indonesian water plants. The food is traditional Sundanese food. The restaurant is a little pricy, compared to other Indonesian restaurants, but for the quality of the food and the ambiance, it is totally worth it. There are also riverside bungalows that you can stay in, which start at around $50 a night.
Bandung is known throughout Indonesia for its shopping, and people come there on the weekend for shopping trips from as far away as Singapore! Many companies have factories near Bandung, and then clothes that aren’t good enough to get sent overseas get sent to the outlets in Bandung. Most of the outlets are either on Dago or Setia Budi. If you aren’t sure exactly where to go, just ask anyone, and they will be able to point you in the right direction.
Like most other cities in Indonesia, Bandung has lots of malls. My two favorites, though, are unique to Indonesia in that they’re outdoor malls. Both Paris Van Java (PVJ) and CiWalk have inside and outside portions. They have lots of great stores and restaurants, and are popular places to hang out, especially for younger Indonesians. If you ever get to Bandung, I highly recommend visiting these spots!
