Recommending two of the best messenger bags worldwide
SFBags – Cargo with Taxi Iridium, Cozmo, Rough Rider, Muzetto…
Greenroom136 – Junkmonkey, Bootstrap, Wildcard…
Two handmade bag companies we are proud to endorse. If you make deliveries for a living, if you work, study or travel abroad, you should consider one of these two professional, beautifully-crafted messenger bags or another product from their manufacturers. Most people having to carry gear or traveling with lots of stuff tend to choose either: A backpack-style bag with two shoulder straps, or a sling/across the shoulder/over the shoulder messenger bag. Since I like being able to get in and out of my bag on trips, and throughout the day, I’ve generally favored messenger bags for my daily commute which can still easily be slung onto your back as needed as long as you don’t mind slinging it with the strap crosswise across your torso.
Two of the absolute best messenger bags for travel or work are those made by SF Bags (Waterfield Designs) and Greenroom136. Neither is as common as Timbuk2 bags, but in my opinion having owned all of them and many more besides, they look better, last longer, are planned out better in terms of pockets and overall usefulness, and will be carried far after other bags are donated to Goodwill and forgotten. In regards to messenger bag manufacturers, there are really only two. (Maybe more if you count 5-11 and GoRuckUSA, both of which are excellent, high-quality bags, but a bit specialized and much more expensive. Minaal has a new design that’s interesting as well but they haven’t gone into production just yet.)
My Taxi-iridium Cargo bag with retro airplane buckle from Waterfield Designs has lasted for almost 16 years of daily carry back and forth to work and overseas and still looks brand new. I’ve swapped it out for short periods of time for other bags only to quickly return everything from that other bag back into my SFbags Cargo Messenger.
The only other bag I would never, ever, want to be without is my custom-made brown/black Junkmonkey Heretic. Greenroom136 out of Malaysia is doing amazing work with high-quality materials and is the only bag manufacturer in my opinion that equals Waterfield Designs. If you require American-made, go with SFBags, otherwise check out Greenroom136, but don’t waste your time buying or carrying any other bag, they simply aren’t worth it. See my review of the Junkmonkey here.
Both these companies also make nice backpack-style bags and stand behind their products. After 12 years a small bit of velcro finally wore out on the inner pocket of my Waterfield messenger bag. The kind folks at SFBags told me to send it to them and they’d replace it free of charge. I’ve never seen a lose string, a lose seam, a leak, or problem. And my bags gets constant compliments everywhere I go. Greenroom136 offers a lifetime guarantee as well. I’m not sure what either company considers a “lifetime,” but unlike a lot of other products out there, both of these bags might actually last a lifetime.
