Jaisalmer is a city located on the western border of India in the Rajasthan region. The city is known as the “Golden City” because all of the houses and buildings are a golden brown. You can get there by train, bus, or car, on camel. The Cultural Center of Jaisalmer is a great place to start your visit. There, you can watch the Ghoomar Dance and the Kathputli Dance, which are the traditional dances of Jaisalmer. Besides traditional dances, the cultural center also has puppet performances. - Golden Fort Jaisalmer
The Golden Fort is a popular tourist attraction in India, located in the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. It is the oldest fort in India dating back to 1156 AD. Interestingly, more than a quarter of Jaisalmer’s population lives within the fort complex. The fort is a World Heritage Site and is one of the largest fortifications in the world.
Patwon-ki-Haveli is the largest and most ostentatious havelis in Jaisalmer. There are five havelis grouped together. The houses have unique architecture and very beautiful carvings. This place is approximately 10 minutes from the gates of the Golden Fort.
- Maharaja Place
This building is a royal palace located in the main heart of the Golden Fort. It is a 7-story palace that has a very beautiful architecture made of carved stone.
Kuldhara is a village founded in 1921 by the Brahmins. But for reasons that are only speculated, the village was abandoned and only the ruins remain. Kuldhara has been used for Bollywood movies.
- Akal Wood Fossil Park
This park is located about 17 km from Jaisalmer. The park is full of fossilized tree trunks of various sizes from the Jurassic era. If you are a geologist or a conservationist, get there early before the tourists arrive.
- Desert National Park
This national park is about 40 km from the city center. It is one of India’s largest national parks with an area of 3162 km2. The best time to visit is from January to March. The park has a collection of fossils of animals and plants, including dinosaur fossils. Desert National Park is the perfect place to do a Jeep safari or go camping. This place is also a haven for migratory birds each year.
- Camel Safari
Camel safaris are also popular in the Jaisalmer area. There are several different companies that do safaris. Many companies have different options, so if you just want to do a short half-day ride, those are available. But if you want to do a longer ride and camp over night, you also have that option.
