Macau is a special administrative region (SAR) in China. Macau is on the western side of the Pearl River, across from Hong Kong. Macau was colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Therefore, Macau’s architecture, art, and traditions are a mixture of Chinese and Portuguese culture. It is on UNESCO’s world heritage list. Macau is also famous for its casino attractions. - A-Ma temple
A-Ma temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Macau. The temple was built in 1448 during the Ming Dynasty. It was built as an expression of gratitude to the goddess mazu, because the goddess has given abundant results to the fishermen. Some of the temple’s highlights are the Gate Pavilion, the Memorial Arch, Zhengjiao Chanlin, and Guanyin Hall. It has ancient Chinese architecture, characterized by many lion statues.
- Macau Museum
This is a museum about Macau’s history and culture. The museum has many historic relics. Macau Museum is located in the Monte Fortress, Praceta do Museu de Macau No. 112, built by the Jesuits in the early 17th century.
- Macau Tower
Macau Tower is Macau’s most well-known landmark. It is 338 meters high and is located in Largo da Torre de Macau. If you are adventurous, you can walk on the Outdoor Observation Deck and see the beauty of Macau Cape, Taipa and Coloane Island or go bungee jumping, Skywalking or Sky Jumping. There are also places to shop and stay around the Macau Tower.
- Sun Yat-Sen Park
This park is the border between Macau and China. The garden has a bird park, a Victorian-style greenhouse, flower gardens, and a bronze sculpture called “Permanent Handshake”, symbolizing the friendship between Portugal and China.
In addition to visiting the tourist spots above, you should also try Macanese food, like Galinha à Africana (African chicken), Shrimp Chilli Macau, Lacassá Soups, and Minchi. Macau is also known for Giant Panda Macau, Seac Pai Van Park, on the island of Coloane. This is a panda conservation area with 330 m2 of indoor space and a 600 m2 outdoor courtyard. Another park in Macau is Hac-Sá Reservoir, located on Coloane Island. There are many things to do in the park, including canoeing, cycling, and camping.
