The Songkran Festival (also known as “The Water Festival”) is an annual event to celebrate the Thailand New Year. The original purpose of the festival was to splash water on your family members and elders, seeking good fortune for the new year. But today, the festival has changed so that you can splash water on anyone and everywhere that day! The Songkran is one of the festivals celebrated massively by both local and foreign tourists. Many foreign tourists come to Thailand to join this water festival.
For this year, 2017, Songkran Festival will be celebrated on April 13th – 15th, but some parts of Thailand extend the festival for an entire week. Where does the festival take place? The festival will be celebrated in all Thailand, and it’s celebrated alternately in some regions. But if you want to have the best experience of Songkran, you should come to Chiang Mai. This place hosts the biggest water festival parade in Thailand. In Chiang Mai, you can see the statues of Buddha being carried away from the local temples to be paraded along the streets. Are there any rules or anything that you can or cannot do during the event? There are no specific rules, but you need to make sure that the water used in the festival is clean water and not hot water. You can use water pistols, water buckets, cups, or anything, but high pressure hoses and guns are prohibited.
If you are in Bangkok, you can join the festival in Khao San Road, Siloam Road, and RCA. Besides the splashing of water, the Songkran is celebrated by applying wet powder to other people’s faces, which means extending the ‘blessing’. But the wet powder is transferred from one person to another person, so it may not be clean. If you have a sensitive face it might have some effects on your skin. So, if you want to avoid the wet powder activity, Khao San Road is the right place to join the festival, because the usage of wet powder is prohibited here.
The other popular place where you can join the festival is in Phuket and Pattaya. And since you will get soaked, make sure you dress appropriately. You can wear a swimsuit. Also, if you want to take pictures or videos during the festival, make sure your gadgets are waterproof. The water used during the festival may damage your gadgets.
If you want to experience Songkran Festival 2017, make sure you book your accommodations early. Decide where you want to join the festival, and prepare to have fun for the water festival in Thailand, next April!
