ANNOUNCED: The Mall of the World, The world’s largest mall and indoor theme park under construction, will include The Dubai Cultural District, inspired by London’s West End and Broadway in New York; The Celebration Walk inspired by the tree and shop-lined pedestrian promenade La Rambla in Barcelona; and hopes that the world class shopping destination will rival Oxford Street in London and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
In summer, the 4.4 miles of promenades and indoor theme park will be covered, and in winter, the spaces will be opened. The statement that came out Saturday, July 5th, 2014 did not say when construction would be completed, how much it would cost or how it would be financed. “The project will be built in phases in alignment with the gradual growth of family tourism in Dubai,” said Mohammed Abdullah al-Gergawi, chairman of Dubai Holding [DUBAH.UL].
The latest version of the plans includes construction of an 8 million square foot (743,000 square meter) mall, connected to a theme park, theaters, medical tourism facilities and 100 hotels and serviced apartment buildings with 20,000 rooms.
When the retail space of the Mall of the World is complete, it will steal the record currently held by local rival Dubai Mall, which is officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest shopping center in the world, and already houses the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, an Olympic-sized ice rink and 22 movie screen cineplexes, as well as the Mall of the Emirates which houses an indoor ski resort (http://www.theplaymania.com/skidubai/welcome) with 22,500 square meters of indoor skiing, and a number of penguins that are let out of their enclosures several times a day.
It will also be in competition with Ferrari World about an hour away in Abu Dhabi for world’s largest indoor theme park – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNSZFTH4pXY
